The top engine option was the huge 428 Cobra Jet. Severely under rated at 335 hp, the Cobra Jet put out closer to 420 hp. Many options were available on the Mach 1 but you could not get a convertible Mach 1. All Mach 1 models were fastbacks. You could however order the 428 Cobra Jet in a convertible. Most people have never seen one because they are incredibly rare. Only 50 convertibles were produced with the 428 Cobra jet. Of those 50, 30 were automatics and 20 were four speeds. This car is one of the 20 four speeds produced. Only two were Candy Apple Red and only one had the white deluxe interior. This is that car. I am the second owner. I bought the car 12 years ago from the daughter of the original owner. The original owner was a Marine pilot who bought the car in 1969 after returning from Vietnam. Being a jet pilot, he wanted the fastest Mustang available but he wanted a convertible. He ordered the car with the 428 Cobra Jet and a four speed. He also got the deluxe interior but he wanted the car to be a sleeper so he did not order the GT package right away. Instead he opted for just hubcaps. The car looked just like any regular Mustang so no one knew what was under the hood. He blew away a lot of muscle cars back in the day with his "sleeper" and after getting tired of that, went to the Ford dealer parts counter, ordered the GT package and console and had it installed by the dealer. The GT package added a front spoiler, GT stripes, hood scoop, pop open GT gas cap and the GT steel wheels. Back in 1969, there were many options that could be added at the dealer if you didn't order it from the factory and the GT package was one of them. Another dealer installed option was the Cobra Jet ram air shaker hood. This car has the cut out pattern in the hood if you wanted to make this a functional ram air Cobra Jet and it would not be incorrect to do that. In addition to the GT steel wheels, I added a set of Magnum 500 wheels and brand new BF Goodrich T/A radials. The original GT wheels and white wall tires also come with the car as well as the original smog pump that was removed to make the car perform better. With a weight of around 2900 lbs., the Mustang convertibles were lighter than the fastbacks. Add 420 hp to that light body and you get a very fast car, even by today's standards.
