Description
1967 Ford Mustang Fastback GT
Ford's General Division Manager was about to introduce the world to the first Ford Mustang, and he knew he had a hit on his hands. Although badged with horses, the new model was named for the World War II fighter plane and Ford sold more than 400,000 the first year, sending other automakers scrambling to conceive competition. The Mustang was such a smash it catapulted Lee Iacocca to the Presidency of Ford later that year.
Imagine having the coolest new car on the block in 1967, the Ford Mustang. Then ramp that up and imagine the coolest version of said wildly popular Mustang, that being the fastback version. Couple that with a 390ci V8, strap a 4-barrel carburetor on, add in the GT package and now you are living large. A great example of this ultimate cool, we give you this Fastback to grace your driveway, and also give you the ability to turn the key and drive away, in this fully restored version of one of the most popular cars ever built.
Exterior
From the galloping pony on the front honeycomb grille, to the yellow lens fog lights which sit inside the grille and are flanked by a single headlight and all the way back to the sloping rear roof line with the iconic louvers this beautiful pony car possesses some small faults, hazing of the paint, a few chips and some unfinished post paint buffing on the lower panels. All the original metal has been retained during the restoration with the exception of the lower rear quarter panels. It's all about awe with the good condition change from the Marti report spec of Wimbledon White to a menacing black respray, restored chrome and brightwork, and racy polished Weld Draglite wheel. And for giggles, let's throw in tasteful stripes just above the stainless rocker molding in glossy red running from wheel well to wheel well. All glass and surrounding brightwork is in excellent condition and bringing up the rear is a GT emblazoned gas filler cap and ribbed filler panel between the tri-bar tail lights. Meanwhile just below dual exhaust protrudes through coves at the bottom of the rear skirt. It just does not get any better than this.
Interior
Hold that last thought...because throw open the doors and reveal a pristine red deluxe vinyl interior seating setup of a 2 plus 2. This interior is original save for the recovered front seats and door panels and frankly to this writer it's hard to distinguish between the new and original, it's that good in here! This is grounded by fade free carpet which also extends to the rear storage area which can be expanded by folding down the rear seat. A red plastic center console with a black and brushed aluminum topper races between the seats and melts up into the dash with a gentle curve. Within this console is the automatic floor shifter, seat belt receivers and a roll up door hiding a small storage compartment at the base of the dash. Looking at the dash, we see a wonderful amalgamation of red metal, red vinyl, a brushed aluminum full width insert and chrome bezel circular instruments flanking a speedometer. More red on the upper door panels, which are highlighted by another brushed aluminum insert and chrome handles, and sides of the rear 2 plus 2. A tight red headliner with an overhead console and map lighting is above all this excitement.
Drivetrain
A pop of the hood and you'll have to squint, because there is so much bling you will barely be able to stand it! A proper 390ci V8 circa 1968 is bathed in dark Ford blue paint has been fitted with a Comp camshaft and Manley adjustable valvetrain during its rebuild. All the excellence is topped by a single Holley 750cfm 4-barrel carburetor, aluminum Streetmaster intake manifold and air cleaner in chrome. Attached at the back is a C6 3-speed automatic transmission with a 10" 3500rpm stall converter and a B&M shift kit. All of this works together to sends the monstrous big block power back to the original Ford 9" TracLoc axle weighing in with a 3.25 ratio.
Undercarriage
Doesn't get any better than this, rust free, good floor pans, unibody seams, and structurally sound framing. Independent coil spring in front and leaf spring suspension on the rear to give this famous pony it's sure-footed ride. Power disc brakes in the front and power drum brakes in the rear give us the whoah factor and headers work with Flowmaster exhaust to handle the exhale from the mill. Our consignor notes that the right front floor pan was replaced during the restoration, however, we note that the front torque box was not reinstalled.
Drive-Ability
A wonderful driver, runner, and accelerator. It ran like it was new with an exhilarating test drive. After you get past half throttle, this car is a screamer, although traction is limited by the rear tires. Handling was as expected, stable and competent and during our panic brake test we came to a smooth straight bias free stop. All functions were working beautifully just like 1967.
Flash back to 1967 suburbia in the driveway, hottest car to come along in years, and it's in your neighbor's driveway. Fast forward we are in the new millennium, same car, now your driveway, and the car looks and performs better than it did when it left the showroom. Come on down .....Fast....back!
