1965 Ford Mustang Coupe
Mustang, Mustang, Mustang! to quote the television advertising in 1965. All the while urging you to walk on your wild side, and your personality will go from dull to a thriller when you get behind the wheel of a 1965 Ford Mustang!
For consignment, a mostly original and a partial amateur restoration to improve on the original. Purchased by our consignor in 1968 making them the second owner, this car was used as a....wait for it....a mode of transportation. Not only surviving winters with snow tires, it also survived the rigors of our consignors 3 children. A restoration was started on this 1965 289ci V8 C code car and now due to our consignors age it is here for the taking, and a hardtop version at that which will have you too saying Mustang! Mustang! Mustang! Need, Need Need!
Exterior
Bathed in an amateur respray of Vintage Burgundy, which has some runs, uneven application, inclusions, and poorly done body repair, this car shows with its passage of time worn on its sleeve. All beading and britework is on as original and while the front bumper remains nice, the rear has chrome loss and surface rusting. The rear trimmed hockey stick cove is present on this year's car, and the utilization of chrome trimmings around all the glass adds in some bling. The deep set single round headlights flank a central dark grille with the galloping steed on the center. A simple chrome mirror adorns the driver's door and on back, a smaller trunk lid deck and the iconic trio of tail lights on each corner. One can notice some darker application of paint around the tail mounted fuel filler cap, but the pony logoed cap remains blemish free. The 14" standard ribbed Mustang wheel covers have a touch of bling added with the faux knock of spinners and all are wrapped with thin white stripe tires.
Interior
Peering inside we are met with original door panels covered in black vinyl. Some tuck and roll inserts with a chrome trimming and shiny handles are here as well. Inside bomber styled black vinyl buckets are floating in a sea of black carpeting and a shifter is within the hump between these buckets. A bench is in back and looks to be in very nicely preserved condition. The original dash and steering wheel are in front showing round gauges at either side of the horizontal speedo and some rectangular warning lights and centered odometer below. All within a field of black and fairly clean inside here. Above the textured headliner in black vinyl is nice and tight but does have numerous large tears over the rear seat. Black carpet with a faded hump covers the floors and a look into the trunk reveals the plaid vinyl factory lining and spare tire cover.
Drivetrain
Under the hood within a patina and slight surface rusted non restored engine bay is the original 289ci V8 C code engine. The entire mill is drenched in gold paint, including the air cleaner, valve covers and water pump. Combustion is being fed by a single 2-barrel carburetor on top and pushing power rearward is a C4 3-speed automatic transmission. Way back is a Ford 8-inch 2.80 rear axle.
Undercarriage
Showing some aging with a light coating of surface rust and plenty of patina on the undercarriage paint. Floor pan replacement is noted along with some invasive rust in the rear unibody rails. Sections of which have been repaired with what appears as body filler. There is more invasive rust noted in the front unibody rails. Sections have been patched with plating welded over the rust and an area under the battery tray is showing a needed repair. Independent coil springs for the front suspension, and leaf springs bring up the rear, meanwhile drum brakes are on all 4 corners, and exhaust although surface rusted is solid along with a newer muffler and tailpipe.
Drive-Ability
After some cranking it started and idled nicely. Needless to say, it hit the test track and drove nicely. Even though the cosmetics are a bit rough, this is still a great driver. All functions were working well although we weren't able to raise Paul Harvey on the AM band.
Keeping true to its roots, this C coded engine 1965 version with a worn respray in Vintage Burgundy is still a very workable car, it just may need some attention and TLC to get it back to snuff. Definitely some undercarriage repairs, then you can proceed to make it your own. I feel a restoration in someone's future and then you will have an all buttoned up classic...Nice.
